The Evolution of Freedom does not seek to replace the traditional work on ethics with some kind of Darwinian alternatives, but rather to place ethics on the foundations it deserves in the first place: naturalistic, realistic, potentially unified visions of our place in nature.

Continuing where he left off with the book Darwin's Dangerous Idea, Dennett focuses on the problem of free will, calling his view naturalistic, a synthesis of philosophy and the natural sciences; his critics call him determinist, reductionist, bio-prophetic and Lamarcanist. Referring to evolutionary biology, neuroscience, economic game theory, philosophy and the meme of Richard Dawkins, Dennett claims that there really is such a thing as free will, but it is not a pre-existential form of our existence, like, for example, the law of gravity.
Dennett strives to match the scientific caricature with precision, empiricism and philosophical outcomes arising from rigorous logic. This book comprises a kind of toolbox for intellectual exercises sympathetic to cultural evolution, and the idea that culture, morality and freedom are as much the result of the evolution of natural selection as of our physical and genetic attributes. But genetic determinism, the author claims, does not include inevitability, as critics might claim, nor does it exclude the soul. Instead, it supports the ideals of morality and choice, illustrating the reasons why these ideals should be nurtured and preserved.
