Summary

Jean-Claude Kaufmann: Life for Two

Several generations ago, a wedding marked the beginning of the joint life of a man and a woman, that is, a marriage union. Today, signifiers are becoming more vague, building a marriage is more complex, and living together is no longer a sufficient criterion for the existence of a couple. Namely, there are couples who do not live together, but also people who share a living space but are not, or are not yet, a couple! When, then, can we say that a couple is established? Are we witnessing the disappearance of the heterosexual couple as the standard model of family and household? Are, as a result, new forms of family? The French sociologist, Jean-Claude Kaufmann, answers these questions in this popular and interestingly written ethnographic study of contemporary ways of establishing a joint life between a man and a woman. To the widespread thesis about the reduced role of marriage in contemporary French and Western European society, the author opposes the thesis about the still central role of the institution of the couple at the beginning of the 21st century. Analyzing the relationship to individual and joint linen, the author investigates the constitution of the modern couple, revealing hidden aspects of social life: the relationship to the body, bodily intimacy, marital contradictions, the division of household chores in a modern marriage, the interaction of the personal and marital identity of the partner, etc. The book is relevant reading for sociologists, ethnologists, anthropologists and psychologists, and is especially suitable for a wider audience interested in scientific interpretations of common things to all of us. unconscious gestures and actions related to physicality and life as a couple. Jean-Claude Kaufmann, sociologist, expert on family and everyday life, is a researcher at the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS; CERSOF, University of Paris V) and professor at the University of Rennes II and Paris V Sorbonne. Life in Two is the result of his two-year research.
