Summary

Pascal Mercier: The Night Train to Lisbon

Raimund Gregorius, an ingenious philological expert in classical languages, prompted by a sudden encounter with a mysterious woman who tried to throw herself from a bridge, with a few words spoken in Portuguese, and by an accidentally discovered book by Amadeu de Prado, a Portuguese poet, doctor and fighter against the Salazar dictatorship, abruptly decides to end the chapter of his "ordinary", woven from the reconciled routine of a middle-aged high school professor in Bern. Going by train to Lisbon will mark the beginning of an unusual quest whose outlines are difficult to glimpse, except for the fact that it is driven by a bizarre inner desire, entangled in the complex web of the enigma of its own mission, as well as the philological call of the siren melody of the newly discovered Portuguese language. The novel by the Swiss philosopher Peter Bieri, whose pseudonym is Pascal Mercier, is a contemplative work, an exciting spiritual-detective thriller, in which the author embarks on an introspective exploration of the human soul following his own erudition. In questioning the position of man in his own life, the apparent arbitrariness of big decisions, consistency, morality and freedom, imbued with deep-rooted doubts and fears, such as already accompany major life changes, and the added dose of daily discomfort and spiritual-emotional crashes, the only possible outcome is the fragile possibility of supervision over the great unknown of Life.
