V.J. Prop: Problems of comedy and laughter
In this monograph, comedy/laughter is observed from a historical, social and psychological point of view, from the position of its activity in works of art. Prop's research testifies that laughter is a typically human phenomenon and is not inherent to other forms of organic life in nature. During the analysis of the phenomenon of laughter, Prop contradicts many authorities who dealt with this topic (Aristotle, Bergson, Schopenhauer, Kant, Hegel, etc.) and often enters into debates with them. The classification of laughter and the means used to understand its action deserve special attention.
The entire argumentation is based on rich material collected from the fields of folk culture, folklore, literature (mainly Russian), theater, etc. Hence, one could conclude that this book is a kind of manual of laughter and as such is intended not only for culturologists, literary critics and theater workers, but also for the so-called ordinary reader who admires laughter as the elixir of life.
