Summary
Gerhard Podskalsky: Medieval Theological Literature in Bulgaria and Serbia
Medieval Theological Literature in Bulgaria and Serbia (865–1459) by the German Slavist and Byzantologist Gerhard Podskalsky is a work that contains a much wider range of topics than the title suggests at first glance. The author first gives an overview of the medieval cultural and political history of both nations, and then deals with the development of their literary traditions, which includes not only texts that would be strictly classified as "theology" according to today's categorizations. From the work, the reader learns about medieval Bulgarian and Serbian chronicles, hagiography, homilies, liturgical poetry, apologetics, canon law, reports from pilgrimages, etc. Although written for a Western reader, the work offers a handful of information and insights that are poorly known even to a domestic informed reader, especially when it comes to Bulgarian literary and cultural heritage, close to Serbian, but different in some aspects. The book contains a large number of extensive and informative footnotes, some of which represent the entire small history of certain issues in scientific debates.
