Wyller Truls

Summary

Truls Wyller: What is time?

Time rules our lives, but what is it really?

Everything we think, feel and do takes place in time, but understanding its nature has always been a challenge. It was once considered a deity, later a physical phenomenon or a mental category, and perhaps it is both, or something else entirely. The book What is time? by the Norwegian philosopher Truls Wyller is by no means an exclusively philosophical work. It illuminates the phenomenon of time both from an everyday perspective and from the point of view of different disciplines - physics, anthropology, history, religion and literature. The question of the relationship between time as experienced by man and time as measured by natural sciences, with the clock as a link, runs through the entire book.

Wyller compares the latest scientific theories with our direct experience of chronology, and rounds off his considerations with his own thesis: the temporal character of events is not abstract, but practical and rooted in human life; time, in its deepest sense, is a human phenomenon. Accessibly written, this book provides a unique and well-rounded view of the nature of time and is essential reading for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the rhythm and flow of our daily existence.

Truls Wyller (born 1951) is a Norwegian philosopher and professor emeritus at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim. He dealt primarily with the philosophy of time and space, the works of Immanuel Kant and Ludwig Wittgenstein, as well as ethics and political philosophy. He is the author of several important books, among which stand out: History of Ethics: Systematic Review (1996, German ed. 2002), Objectivity and Ego-Consciousness: Actualization of the Philosophy of Immanuel Kant (2000), Time and Space. Philosophical Essays (2006), The Size of Things: An Essay on Space and Time (2010), Thoughts, Time and Things (2023). The book What is the time? It has been translated into English as What is the Time?: Research (Reaction Books, 2020) and into German as What is the Time. Ein Essay (Reclam, 2016).
