Summary
Alain Corbin: The History of Silence: From the Renaissance to the Present Day
Silence is not just the absence of noise. We almost forgot about it. Official signs have changed, weakened, desacralized. The fear, sometimes even terror, that the silence evokes has become even more intense. In the past, people in the West felt the depth and nuances of silence, as well as silence itself. They saw silence as a prerequisite for spiritual peace, introspection, meditation, prayer, daydreaming, creativity; first of all, as an inner space where speech takes place. They described in detail the social tactics of silence. For them, painting represented the speech of silence.
