Summary

Sven Lindqvist: Root out all the dredging

"To root out all the drudgery" is both an essay on the origins of the European idea and practice of genocide, as well as a travelogue. Traveling across the Sahara, Sven Lindqvist brings to light the history of the European conquest of Africa by interweaving his sometimes lyrical notes with statements from the works of philosophers, eugenicists, apologists for racism, historians, war leaders, social and natural scientists - such as Ch. Darwin, W. Churchill, H. Spencer, etc. In an effort to reconstruct the history of colonial imperialism and the racism that justified it (and racism was legitimized by "science", first in England and later elsewhere in Europe), through 169 short chapters, Lindqvist traces the genesis of the idea, theory and practice summarized in the title "Eradicate All Dredging". These are the words uttered by one of the heroes, the infamous Kertz ("Exterminate all beasts") at the end of Joseph Conrad's novel "Heart of Darkness". Against the self-proclaimed image of Europe as the "cradle of progress", Lindqvist posits a brutal policy of expansion that, in the name of alleged biological and intellectual superiority, as well as a dubious civilizational task, opened the way to new violence. Eradication of all depletions is original, but at the same time disturbing work.
