Johannessen Kåre

Summary

Kåre Johannessen: Desire and Passion in the Middle Ages

How did the people of the Middle Ages experience love, passion and physical desire? Did they really live in a dark age of strict ecclesiastical control, or behind the walls of castles and cities did imagination flourish and freer views of carnality than we might think?

Danish historian Kåre Johannesen talks about the world of medieval love, marriage and infidelity through stories about forbidden meetings, prostitution, homosexuality, magical "cures" against unwanted pregnancy, etc. Based on a rich selection of sources - from church regulations and court records to literature and artistic representations - the author questions the myths of the "innocent" past and reveals how people then, just like today, were divided between passion and restrictions.
Kåre Johannesen revives the private life of the Middle Ages in an accessible and witty style, specifically in Western Europe in the period between 1000 and 1500, and shows that the Middle Ages also had something to say about love and passion, and that that era, according to its norms, is not so far from us. The book has rich pictorial material that gives it a special quality.

Kåre Johannessen (Kåre Johannessen, born 1964) is a Danish historian, archaeologist, writer, lecturer and presenter. For many years he was a curator in several Danish museums.
