Samadhi

Antić Ivan

Summary

Ivan Antić: Samadhi

Since man's essence is determined by the relationship of his consciousness to existence, man's essence is transcendental as is the essence of consciousness. If it didn't, it wouldn't be able to connect existence and consciousness. Man actually both unites and separates consciousness and existence. He can only do this because he is above both. Only because he is above both can he understand both. It cannot experience the union and unity of consciousness and existence without the experience of their separation. When a person is aware not only of existence as such, and not of awareness of existence as such, but also of himself as a key factor that stands in the relationship between consciousness and existence, then such a person is fully enlightened or realized in his transcendental essence.

The only teaching that represents such a human essence is the teaching of sankhya.

The only practice that, based on the teaching of sankhya, systematically brings man to his essence, which unites consciousness and existence in man, is the teaching of yoga which was collected by Patanjali in his work Yoga Sutras, or Sayings of Yoga.[2] In it, the union of consciousness and existence is called samadhi. The Sanskrit word samadhi literally means 'holding together' or 'collectedness'. Patanjali defined samadhi as the unity of subject and object of perception, the unity of consciousness or transcendental consciousness, which transcends the subject-object division.

The fully realized unity of consciousness and existence in man occurs as samadhi.

Here we will contribute to that unity by describing it in all details, how it happens both externally and internally.

[1] See about this in my book "Sânkhya - an ancient treatise on nature and human soul".

[2] In order to properly understand Patanjali, it is necessary to get acquainted with the contemporary presentation of the Yoga Sutras presented by Osho in the work Yoga: Alpha and Omega. The best commentaries on Patanjali's Yoga Sutras are presented there.
