Summary

Peter Suber: Open access

Open access to scientific knowledge implies that every person who has access to the Internet anywhere in the world has the right to read, download, save, print and use the digital content of works published in the open access regime, with the only obligation to correctly indicate the source of the information.

The movement for open access arose as a reaction to the absurd situation that the results of research, which were carried out with budget funds, cannot be obtained without great expense even by taxpayers. and not even the authors themselves, because they had to transfer the copyrights to the publishers when publishing, which are usually highly profitable multinational corporations.

In his book, in ten chapters, the author logically and concisely communicates everything you need to know about open access, perhaps the most important initiative in the field of availability and exchange of information and content. Without hesitation and clearly answers the questions that many ask themselves today, it clears up the doubts and misconceptions that mostly arise due to the too fast development of this concept that does not get to be elaborated in detail and established.

Going through the chapters that explain what open access is (and, equally important, what it is not); present the main motives for its practice; they represent the types and subtypes, as well as the policies of institutions (mainly educational and scientific-research ones) that encourage mandatory open access; list the intellectual and artistic products that can be in open access, and to whom it is intended; clarifies the relationship between open access and intellectual property rights (copyright); presents economic calculations and financial models that are applied in open access publishing; discusses the likely impact on traditional pay-for-access journal publishing; predicts an immediate future that is generationally on the side of open access, and gives advice to authors on how to make their works open access.
