Summary

Ole Hoiris: "Wild man" in the European history of ideas: the limits of human nature

"The lack of interest in the inhabitants of Tierra del Fuego can be seen in the fact that they were only caught sporadically to be exhibited in European zoos. A small group of these natives was presented in London in 1889, and during the show they were fed raw meat! Out of eleven of them, as many as were caught, barely four survived returned home. The same mortality rate was recorded in 1881, when only four of the natives, who were commissioned by the Berlin Society for Anthropology, Ethnology and Prehistory, which were exhibited throughout Europe, also lived in Paris, where the members of the Paris Anthropological Society still complained that the natives did not allow their genitals to be measured syphilis, which they got after being raped by the guards.
The Europeans started to colonize this area at the end of the 19th century and were primarily engaged in sheep farming and logging. When gold was found in 1883, mass immigration began and lasted until 1909. Thus, Land of Fire became a place to go to, not a place to pass by. XIX Interest in travelogues from exotic regions waned in the second half century, as the attention was directed inward, which was a consequence of the romantic construction of the nation states. In addition, the natives were already exterminated due to diseases that were fatal for them, as well as due to brutal killing. They were killed en masse because members of a large group of "treasure hunters" received one pound sterling for each killed native, and the Anthropological Museum in London, for example, paid up to eight pounds for one head of a native of Tierra del Fuego."
