Mayrhofer Manfred

Summary

Manfred Mayrhofer: Sanskrit grammar

In Sanskrit - sti. Sam-skrta, "prepared, correct, shaped for sacred use - is the name given to the classical form of ancient Indian which, standardized by the efforts of grammarians, has remained usable to this day as the language of literature and science. This norm grew out of the ancient Indian linguistic tradition, which begins with the hymn collection Rig-veda; through younger Vedic literature, poetic and theological-philosophical texts, going to the epic, it gradually reaches the form that has been established as "Sanskrit". The difference between Sanskrit and the older Vedic language stage does not lie in the area of phonetic changes, but Sanskrit shows the loss of grammatical forms and categories, as well as the fall into oblivion or a different application of certain words of the older language.
