Summary

Ivan Lovrić: Osservazioni di Giovanni Lovrich sopra diversi pezzi del Viaggio in Dalmazia del signor abate Alberto Fortis coll'aggiunta della vita di Soçivizca

Ex libris Ivo Dubravčić.

LOVRIĆ, Ivan (Lovrich, Giovanni), writer (Sinj, b. 1754 — Sinj, 14. XI. 1777). Studied medicine in Padua. Encouraged by the study of A. Fortis (1774), he composed the polemical work Osservazioni di Giovanni Lovrich sopra diversi pezzi del Viaggio in Dalmazia del signor abate Alberto Fortis coll'aggiunta della vita di Soçivizca (Venice, Francesco Sansoni, 1776; translated into Croatian by M. Kombol, Zagreb 1948), in the preface of which he explains the Enlightenment-rationalist motives that obliged him to correct Fortis factual omissions and reports on real cultural and economic conditions in the region from the source of Cetina to Trilje. Having thoroughly visited the region, in the first part (Del corso della Cetina, il Tilurus, o Nastus degli antichi) he presented geographical, geological and hydrographic details and described archaeological sites with epigraphic remains from the Roman era, in the second (De' costumi de' Morlacchi) he expertly described the customs and beliefs of the Dalmatian Zagora and warned about the unfavorable economic conditions there, correcting Fortis's socio-anthropological analysis, and in the third (Life of Stanislav Sočivica) he brought a biography according to the narration of S. Radović Sočivica, in which he explained the causes of the prevalence of hajducija in the Cetinje region. Describing the socio-political and economic situation of the population, he directed sharp criticism at the clergy, especially the Franciscans. Because of such a point of view, attacks on A. Kačić Miošić and L. Vladmirović, and incorrect epigraphic readings and etymological explanations, the work met with an unfavorable reception among contemporaries. In his defense, Lovrić published a pamphlet Lettera apologetica di Giovanni Lovrich al celebre signor Antonio Lorgna (Brescia 1777), a response to a critically intoned article attributed to A. M. Lorgna (Efemeridi letterarie di Roma, 1776, 35), to which Fortis himself replied (L'abate Fortis al signor Giovanni Lovrich. Brescia 1777). In the homeland, the criticism of J. Radman (Lettera del r. p. Gaetano Deribak sul libro delle Osservazioni di Giovanni Lovrich. Bullettino di archeologia e storia dalmata, 1883, 11–12; 1884, 1–3) had the greatest resonance. Although insufficiently substantiated, Lovrić's observations about antiquities and the oral literature he wrote down were confirmed by archaeological, ethnological and folkloristic research, and the description of Sočivic's life served as a source for the romantic literary treatment of the Morla theme in the 19th century. century and was translated into English, French, German and Italian. According to Kombol's translation, the drama Life of Stanislav Sočivica
