Lebović Đorđe

Summary

Đorđe Lebović: Angels will not come down from heaven

The circle has closed. Nine stories from the legacy of Đorđe Lebović, which are being published for the first time, seem to replace the never written two final chapters of his novel *Semper idem*. The speech of the inmates and the authentic description of the camp Golgotha in these stories are always raised to the level of humor, which is apparently not characteristic of a place of death and crime. As a rule, the characters are addressed by nicknames, the dialogues carry the plot, but even that dramaturgical charge is seasoned with often black humor jokes: "In the camp, in the absence of bread, humor was the only possible option to cheat hunger and survive." Nevertheless, although "people don't like it when someone talks about the suffering that bypassed them", the writer, with descriptions of dying, scattered corpses and camp inmates turned into living skeletons due to hunger, thirst, disease, cold and exhaustion, in a dramatic and poignant way paid tribute to his dead comrades - peers from the children's barracks who grew up too soon - conveying their words and dreams of freedom, because the hope of salvation did not leave them until the last moment. In the appendix "From the writer's notebook" Lebović dissects the figure and work of Hitler and the rise of Nazism - its methods, ideology, propaganda and historical consequences - as well as the Balkan region burdened with nationalism and hatred in a series of short fragments.
