I simply wanted everything I heard, what we talked about and what I saw to be neat and tidy. Everything I talked about with my partner - whose name I made up, but not him... I didn't write about some people. I didn't know them well, even though they were there too. I wrote about some of them even though they were not there. But we talked about them or at least mentioned them. Writing in Amsterdam saved me from the despair that things didn't turn out the way I wanted... I still feel the same about all that today. Thirty years have passed. Everything was just like that. Now that's gone. It seems like everything is made up. My brother died of AIDS two years after I returned from Holland. A friend with whom I sat and talked for days in Amsterdam—with whom I had been close long before that—died, as expected, of a heroin overdose five years after my return. All these people, friends, those we talked about and mentioned - almost all of them are dead today. Too many drugs, several suicides and diseases and one murder. And the dog that I occasionally walked - he also died...
