Bjelica Branislav

Summary

Branislav Bjelica: Belgrade Loser

Belgrade has one Winner, but there are many losers.
There are them in all parts of the city, they are planted everywhere. They are the heroes of Branislav Bjelica's stories, by no means heroes or prominent people of Belgrade. Some of them have practically never moved from their neighborhood. There they are, in the local supermarket, where they share beer and engage in politics. Unlike "local politicians", the taxi driver Šona buzzes around all the streets, knows every hole on the Belgrade asphalt. Hairdresser Ceca doesn't make a lot of noise, but like Šoneta, everyone in town annoys her. Mainly because they are peasants. Teacher Sneža is an unusual Belgrader, for her all young people are wonderful - until they grow up to be grumpy Belgraders. On the other hand, Duško the Gypsy "with Kalenić" did not get much education ("well, you know how, brother, Gypsies didn't get much education even when I went to school"), but he is a bigger Belgrader than all Belgraders - eighth generation, right?

In his book, Bjelica collected ordinary and unremarkable inhabitants of the capital, but steadfast in their infamous existence. Belgrade is theirs, although they have no ambition to conquer it... Except for Ivana Schneider, now in advanced years, who has only one wish: to climb the famous balcony of the City Assembly, where winners climb, and show everyone the middle finger.

"Bane Bjelica taught me literature, in this book he brilliantly played with words and unusually described the life of ordinary people."
– Simonida Milojković, writer

"The author of this book is the most positive madman I've ever met in Belgrade!"
– Aca Seltik, musician
