Summary
Philippe Masson: De Gaulle
Charles André Joseph Marie de Gaulle (Lille, November 22, 1890 – Colombey-les-deux-Eglises, November 9, 1970), often called Général de Gaulle in France, was a French general and statesman, serving as the 18th President of France. Before World War II, de Gaulle was known as a military tactician for armored warfare, and advocated the concentrated use of armored and air forces. During the war, he reached the rank of brigadier general and was the president of the government of Free France in exile. Between 1944 and 1946, after the liberation of France from the Axis occupation, he was the president of the Provisional Government. Invited to form a new government after the Algerian coup in 1958, he inspired a new constitution, and in 1959 took office as the 1st president, 18th in total, of the Fifth Republic. His political ideology is known as Gaullism (French Gaullisme), and it has had a great influence on modern French politics. Gaullism, which raised itself above political parties and left-right distinctions, is primarily characterized by the desire for independence within the framework of the Cold War, economic dirigisme and voluntarism. Although most Gaullists were leftists, the ideology is considered social conservative, and is cited as the official inspiration for the later RPR and today's UMP, but there is a big difference between these neo-Gaullist parties and the original ideology.
