This is the first novel of the Czech poet Jiří Šotola, whose poems have already entered many anthologies of world poetry. The Society of Jesus was first published in 1969 and immediately attracted the attention of critics and audiences not only in Czechoslovakia, but throughout the world. Although this is a historical novel, the reader is inadvertently forced to make comparisons with contemporary situations and events. In this sense, one of our critics in the magazine "Književna smotra" (Lj. Bauer) drew an interesting parallel between The Society of Jesus and the novel Dervish and death by Meša Selimović.
