Summary
Andrej Platonov: Džan: novel
The novel Džan (1936) was created after Andrej Platonov's stay in Central Asia (Turkmenistan) in 1935. The word "jan" means the same as "zen" in Japanese; here it is the name of a people that is disappearing and means "a soul that seeks happiness". This mystical story about the messiah of our time who saves his people from the desert is one of the pearls of Russian literature of the 20th century. Along with the book Return, Džan is the right starting point for reading the great Russian writer.
