Algren Nelson

Summary

Nelson Algren: Walk on the Dark Side

Outcasts and losers, cheats and cheated, maimed and ragged, lovers and perverts, broken and broken, wet and warm brothers, dilapidated whores and petty thieves... or as Nelson Algren puts it better: »all those who could not admit that the money was spent, the dream was lost, the magic was gone; all those who are not connected to anyone and for whom no one prays", are the anti-heroes of his novel, the embodiment of the "dark side" of the street. Truly, that Algren is a great writer, and Šareni dučan once again joyfully draws attention to an excellent, but for who knows what reasons, somewhat forgotten and neglected author.
Although a graduate journalist, Algren worked as a seasonal worker and traveling salesman during the economic crisis of the 1930s, and ended up behind bars for petty theft. Those experiences made a deep impression on him and deepened his solidarity with outcasts, generally unsuccessful, failed, "former" people; and encouraged him to explore the "dark side" of life, the humiliated and rejected, and assign them the main roles in his literary world. And for Walk on the Dark Side, it could be said that the saying applies: the surface is the depth, because it is only a superficial story about the world of weirdos, opiate addicts, pimps and prostitutes, criminals and drunkards...
In fact, the story that Algren tells is at least trivial - it brings to the fore people lost in the hustle and bustle of smelly bars and sweaty pimps, who "rarely lay down to rest, they hid behind the promises of advertising posters, in the garbage-strewn background world, avoiding the headless race for money and fame"; people who, like the author, have experienced, not always through their own fault, the other, bitter side of life.
As an additional reason for the curious to reach for this book, let's mention the excellent translation by Antun Šoljan, the wonderful self-portrait of Milivoj Uzelc on the cover, the thematically related John Fante who accepted the adaptation of this novel for the film, Lou Reed, who was inspired by this novel for the song of the same name, Walk on the Wild Side, and Ernest Hemnigway, who is Algren's appearance met in literary heaven with the words: "Mr. Algren, man, you are really good..."
