Summary

Antun Gustav Matoš: Tired stories

At the end of the 19th century, when literary magazines were widely read, and first editions and debuts of all authors were snatched up, a literary genius appeared in our country: Antun Gustav Matoš. Today, when similar magazines are much less read and neither first editions nor reprints are sought after, Matoš's work is always relevant, and this reissue of Tired Stories is just a confirmation. Like any genius, life did not care for him: difficult survival from the pen, farming, mobilization, desertion, destitution, fighting around the world, illness and premature death - all this marked Matoš in the literary and historical memory, but he was marked even more by the excellence and inventiveness of his creativity. And, as is usually the case with geniuses, their life and creativity are intertwined, so the protagonists of these stories are often similar to the author: dreamers, artists, bohemians, losers, wanderers and similar restless spirits.
Although his contemporaries, critics and the public, most of all appreciated his travelogues, poetry, essays and criticism, AGM (the recognizable trigram with which he used to sign himself) especially stuck to his stories. The modern (stic) approach, the exceptional aesthetic level and the art of narration were a huge step forward for Croatian literature, and Matoš became and remains a role model for most of our literary storytellers. Tired stories, as well as those from both Iverj, alarmed the literary spirits and the zeitgeist of the time with their significantly different expression compared to the previous (mostly realistic and romantically intoned) spectrum of Croatian prose.
According to Andrić, he was a "fanatic of life and a believer in beauty", but he was also the greatest writer of his era, which remains remembered and recorded as - Mato's era. Today, a century later, the initials AGM represent, as Krešimir Nemec wittily remarked, "something like a guarantee certificate, proof of Croatian quality"!
