Summary
Lucian of Samosata: The True Story
The novel, which is now in your hands, is based on pure imagination. Everything in it is fiction or, as Lucian himself says at the beginning, everything is a lie except for the statement that everything is a lie. This novel is also picaresque and evokes the odyssey of Lucian himself across the ocean, all the way to the moon, unknown continental lands, even to the ancient paradise, the Island of the Blessed, finally residing in the womb of a huge whale. Fantastic animals appear, the kind that only Lucian's inexhaustible imagination could imagine. Given that it describes a trip to the moon, we could see The True Story as the first science fiction novel, focusing not on science but on fictional natural phenomena.
