Summary

Ivana Brlić - Mažuranić: Jaša Dalmatin

First edition. Art design by Vladimir Mažuranić Jr., Omer Mujadžić and Tomislav Krizman

Jaša Dalmatin, Viceroy of Gudžerat is the last and lesser-known, but extremely exciting historical adventure novel for young people by the great Croatian writer Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić, published at the end of her life, in 1937. Based on the real historical study of her father, the distinguished historian Vladimir Mažuranić, the novel brings the incredible fate of a boy from the Croatian coast (from the Dubrovnik region) who is taken into slavery at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries. After difficult trials and a journey that takes him through the Saray in Constantinople and the deserts on the Euphrates, Jaša reaches far away, exotic India. Thanks to his extraordinary strength, nobility, architectural visionary and sharp mind, he overcomes all obstacles there and wins the trust of the local Sultan Mahmud Begra, rising from an oppressed slave to the powerful title of viceroy of the rich Indian province of Gujarat. In this adolescent novel, the writer virtuoso combines historical archival material with a sumptuous, fairy-tale imagination, conjuring up the mystical atmosphere of the Orient and Indian cities. The motif of loyalty to one's own identity runs strongly throughout the story because the main character, despite acquiring immense wealth, power and luxury on the other side of the world, never forgets his native language, origin and moral values that he brought from home.
