Summary
Goncalo M. Tavares: Jerusalem
"Jerusalem" is a peculiar, disturbing vision of the fragility of existence at the beginning of a new century, in a world that seems monstrously cold, dead, possessed by evil. In this novel about the search for comfort and true feelings in the midst of heartless rationality, violence and fear, the protagonists are: a man who we find mustering the strength to throw himself out the window; a woman discharged from a psychiatric institution, terminally ill; her ex-husband, a doctor who studies the historical development of crime; a prostitute looking for customers; a man wandering the streets with the burden of war trauma. Their paths intertwine in an atmosphere of hopelessness and insanity. Goncalo M. Tavares managed to weave from these elements a tense, poignant story imbued with dark humor.
