Summary
Luis Vaz de Camoes: The Lusiadis
Readers are presented with a classic work of Portuguese literature, the Portuguese national epic published in 1572, the Lusiadis. This long epic poem in ten cantos tells, through historical and mythological allegories, about the courage of the Portuguese people in the age of great discoveries in the 16th century. The epic's main theme is the epic voyage of the great Portuguese navigator Vasco da Gama and his discovery of the sea route to India. However, numerous historical and imagined adventures of ancient gods, heroes, military leaders, and anonymous Portuguese are inserted into that thread.
