Max Hansen, a Norwegian, is a theater director on tour in the United States. He suffers from insomnia. He very likely turned into an American. He hadn't been home in over twenty years. If he had been asked, he would never have left his birthplace, a suburb of Stavanger on the west coast of Norway, where children were allowed to make as much noise as they wanted while their fathers worked on the North Sea oil rigs. In the summer of 1990, when Max was thirteen years old, the family left Norway and immigrated to the USA, where his father was waiting for a new job at American Airlines. On Long Island, New York, Max is forced to find new streets to call his own, while his family slowly falls apart. There he meets Mordecai, and through him, Mischa, a Canadian woman seven years older than the two of them, a rising fine artist who spends her summers on Fire Island. There's also Ove, Max's uncle, who now goes by the name Owen and lives in the Apthorp building on the Upper West Side, and in the late sixties he moved from Oslo to become a jazz musician, which he fails and instead goes to the Vietnam War to get American citizenship. Max, Mischa and the Tet Offensive is a sprawling novel about art, homesickness and the effort to create something to call home, about the applicability of Vietnamese guerrilla warfare tactics to everyday life, about those who were in the war and those who protested against it, about generic music in libraries, hyper-realistic images of washing machines and elaborate productions of endless plays and films; about growing up with communist parents and growing up in general, about the sun on Fire Island and the highly sought-after working copy of Coppola's Apocalypse Today. But most of all, it is a novel about the big question that everyone who has ever left home sooner or later asks themselves: How long can you stay away before it is too late to come home?
