Summary
Jean Rico Carfolio: Measure of Time
The novel Measure of Time by Italian author Djanrik Karofilo was shortlisted for the Strega Award, the most prestigious Italian literary award, in 2020. It is a tense court drama set in the south of Italy, but also a story about passion and the passage of time. The novel was published in 2019 and is one of the works in the series that follows the life of lawyer Guido Guerrieri. In this book, Lorenza, a woman with whom Guverieri was in a relationship thirty years earlier, comes to his office and represents his first great disappointment in love. Lorenca is now a single mother and is in big trouble. Namely, her twenty-five-year-old son Jakopo was placed in prison, accused of murder. Kostamanja's lawyer, who defended him in the first-instance proceedings, has passed away, so Lorenza is now asking Guido to defend her son in the appeal proceedings. Guido agrees to defend Jakop, but he soon realizes that the case he has embarked on is particularly thorny. Drugs, dealers, eavesdropping, confrontations between mafia clans are just some of the elements that become essential for the further development of the novel and the attempt to uncover the truth, but the author's intention to bring us as faithfully as possible the nature of the novel should be highlighted by the court proceedings themselves.
