Christmas is just around the corner, and Ronja and Melissa's father loses his job. When Ronja, with a little help from the school janitor, helps her father get a job selling Christmas trees, it seems that luck has finally smiled on them. The refrigerator is full, and the father comes home smiling, covered in fir needles. But the Stargate, the local inn, has an irresistible attraction and the father soon abandons his duties. The girls decide to take his place, in order to ensure the Christmas they have always dreamed of. During rare breaks, in the darkness of Norwegian December, they dream of a brighter place full of goodness and abundance - and discover that there are people in the world who could help them.
