Summary

Gianrico Carofiglio: The Unwitting Witness

Gianrico Carofiglio was born in Bari (Italy) on May 30, 1961. Although as a boy he dreamed of becoming a writer one day, he took up pen only in 2000, when, as he says, depression gripped him, and he began to find the necessary therapeutic dimension in the written word. "Testimone inconsapevole" (Palermo, Sellerio, 2002) is his first in a series of ten books published so far. The main character of the novel "The Unwitting Witness" is the lawyer Guido Guerrieri, whom the author will use in his other award-winning books "Ad occhi chiusi" (eng. "A Walk in the Dark") and "Ragionevoli Dubbi" (eng. "Reasonable Doubts"). Two films were made based on the motifs of these books, and the one based on the next book, "Il passato è una terra straniera" (English: "The past is a foreign land") was declared the best film of 2008 at the Miami Film Festival. In January 2010, he published his fourth novel featuring Guerrieri, "Le Perfezioni Provvisorie" ("The Temporary Perfections"), which sold 450,000 copies. Working as a prosecutor, he devoted most of his time to the fight against the infamous La ndrangheta criminal group, for which he was forced to ride in an armored car with an armed escort. Four years ago, he spent a few days in Bosnia and Herzegovina, held a lecture at the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina and spoke about his experiences in the fight against organized crime.
