Summary
Borislav Pekić: Letters from abroad
Pekić's letters, which are before the readers, were personally read by the writer over the course of two years through the Yugoslav section of the BBC thirty years ago. In them, the protagonists are two imaginary characters: Živorad, who embodied the Yugoslavs, and Mr. Jones, who represented a typical Englishman. It was not difficult to find topics for his letters to Pekić in books, newspapers and events, either from London and Belgrade, or from other European countries and world centers. His vast knowledge in various fields, from mythology, through philosophy and politics, to music and literature, as well as his literary mastery, made every topic, every single letter sound close and recognizable even today, while at the same time surprising with its originality and universal message.
The three cycles of letters from abroad, collected in this book, are true essayistic pearls, prose miniatures that once again confirm Pekić's sovereign command of all literary genres.
