Medo Pucić: Poems
Pjesne (1862) is the main collection of collected poems of Dubrovnik landowner, poet and politician Medo Pucić (Orsato Pozza). He edited and printed the book during his stay in Karlovac, and it was published by Abel Lukšić. This collection represents the pinnacle of his poetic creativity and brings a synthesis of his revivalist, patriotic and intimate preoccupations
- Structure and content: The collection contains about 230 pages. Pucić included in it a fragment of his song Cvijeta, the famous cycle Bosanska davorija, as well as occasional tributes to prominent figures such as Adam Mickiewicz and ban Josip Jelačić.
- Translations: In addition to original poems, the collection also includes his excellent translations of the greats of Italian romanticism, primarily Giacomo Leopardi and Alessandro Manzoni.
- Style and motifs: Pucić's poetry is deeply connected with the historical and social circumstances of its time. In his poetic expression, he often uses the structure of a poetic story, successfully assimilating folk motifs, and makes extensive use of eight- and ten-point verse under the influence of folk poetry.
- Ideological background: While the early period contains intimate and romantic lyrics, the Poems as a whole reflect an engaged cultural worker whose goal was the freedom of Dubrovnik and the affirmation of Slavic unity
