Summary
Medo Pucić: Slavic Anthology from the Manuscripts of Dubrovnik Poets
In 1844, Count Medo Pucić publishes in Vienna the Slavic Anthology from the Manuscripts of Dubrovnik Poets, which he dedicates to Duke Karl Ludovic of Bourbon (from 1846 to 1848 he was chamberlain at his court). When compiling the Slavonic anthology, with the publication of which he joined the circle of Gaje's Illyrians, Pucić used his own rich collection of manuscripts and made a selection of eleven, in his opinion, the best old Dubrovnik poets of the "golden age" (15th and 16th centuries). He included poems by Džora Držić, Mavro Vetranović, Nikola Dimitrović, Andrija Čubranović, Marin Držić, Nikola Nalješković, Dinko Ranjina, Saba Bobaljević Mišetić, Miha Bunić Babulinović, Fran Lukarević Burin and Dominko Zlatarić in the anthology which was the first to be printed, and the second collection of older Dubrovnik poetry after Nikša Ranjina's Collection. With his choice, Pucić wanted to testify to the former glory of Dubrovnik and to warn of the gloomy reality and insufficient care for folk creativity and valuable manuscripts of old Dubrovnik literature, and at the same time to show the quality and richness of the selected poetry in form and content.
