Horvat Srećko

Summary

Srećko Horvat: After the Apocalypse

In this post-apocalyptic journey, the philosopher Srećko Horvat calls for the investigation of the apocalypse as a "revelation", rather than in its colloquial meaning of "the end". Because the only way to prevent the end - that is, general extinction - is to raise awareness and address a number of interconnected threats, such as the climate crisis, nuclear danger and the current pandemic. The book outlines a philosophical approach to dealing with what Horvat, borrowing a term from climate science and giving it a theological twist, calls "eschatological turning points". It is no longer just the nuclear age or the climate crisis, but their collision, along with various other major threats – not just the pandemic, but the viruses of capitalism and fascism. Horvat claims that the current "revelation" is simple and unprecedented: the alternatives are no longer socialism or barbarism, but the only alternative today is a radical reinvention of the world, or mass extinction. After the apocalypse is not only an urgent call to mourn tomorrow's dead today, but also to fight for our future while we still can.
