Oshine, dear mistress, and heal his heart", is a line from the song Venus in Furs, published in 1967 on the "banana" album of the legendary Velvet Underground, inspired by the novel of the same name by Leopold von Sacher-Masoch. Although it was read with pleasure at the time of its publication (1870), this small book of great influence received a worthy interpretation beyond psychiatric manuals only a century later, at the time of the mentioned Velvets, when there were renewed and critical editions, screen adaptations and theatrical adaptations... so that after almost half a century there would be a real eruption of interest in her soft-porn trabantes and books of similar provenance with the theme of sexual submission and slavery to "masters". led by the mega-bestseller 50 Shades of Grey.
But let's ignore the shades and go back a bit to the originator and the original, because "everything else is shades", as a popular entertainer once suggested and sang. In Venus, Sacher-Masoch elevates the pleasure of suffering to the point of triumph, so his hero Severin gladly endures and invokes the worst humiliations from his cruel mistress Wanda: "I want to worship a woman, and I can only do that if she is cruel to me," he says. Viennese neurologist Richard von Krafft-Ebing, after the author's last name, later immortalized this pattern of behavior with the term "masochism". And so Sacher-Masoch, and it all started when he felt the need to tell his life story, caused a domino effect that goes on and on...
