Summary

Mani Gotovac: Partings Everything starts with a breakup. Written by Paul Valéry. Cold rain is pouring down outside. It squeaks, it falls a little, it doesn't. I open the umbrella, close it. It's damp, uncomfortable. As if that rain is more in the body than in the clouds. On the way from Marulić's monument to Mihanović's, my friend grinds the latest gossip for another ten minutes. I tell her I'm in a hurry. She can't hear me, I can't hear her. Grind. Greetings, I repeat - I'm in a hurry. I walk slowly. I was surprised by a cell phone this morning. Somewhere around 11 o'clock. Actually an SMS. "I'm waiting for you at the Esplanade for dinner. Be punctual." (excerpt from the novel) One man, one woman: love, passion, desire. Simply life, a life that begins with a physical desire, almost a hunger for another person. He wants her, she wants him. Over the years, over the decades, they come and go to each other, passion becomes love, then friendship. But the longing never goes away: only the moments of closeness are getting rarer, and the breaks between them are getting longer. A relationship that started with meetings turns into a series of breakups. Interruptions are futile, but partings are inevitable. And the difficult question remains: what did we miss? Where, when? For Mani Gotovac it means: in love, therefore, in life. Andrea Zlatar Mani Gotovac was born in Split in 1939. She is the daughter of lawyer Zdravko Birimiša and actress Marija Danira. She graduated from the Classical High School in Split, which was attended at the same time by Petar Brečić, Igor Mandić, Tonko Maroević, Zvonimir Mrkonjić, Igor Zidić and others. As a student, she writes theater reviews, works as a radio journalist, writes reviews and essays about theater that she publishes in the magazines Prolog, Scena, Forum, the Italian revue Sipario and elsewhere. She graduated in comparative literature and theater studies with prof. Ivo Hergešić at the Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb. She took the last name Gotovac by marrying Peru Gotovac, and kept it even after the divorce.
