I feel a little lonely. I don't see what I thought would happen - more energy, more discipline and more verve in Caribbean poetry. This is perhaps because the Caribbean is more focused on music: every culture stands out for something, Acarib poetry, talent and genius clearly stand out in music. On the other hand, the modern Caribbean is something very young. I see myself at the beginning, rather than the end, of a tradition... My generation of West Indian writers... all feel the thrill of an absolute sense of discovery. (D.W.)
