Summary
Maja Lunde: The Dream of a Tree
In Tao's world, only genetically manipulated seeds remain. But the original seed was in the vault. With these seeds, one could turn back time, create the agricultural diversity that the human species once enjoyed, find specialized food plant species suitable for all conditions, that thrive in heat, drought, cold, moisture, that would endure the world as it has now become. It was the variety that would save them, that would give food to all who were starving.
“It still exists,” Mei-Ling said. “Who would have thought that.”
“Certainly not you,” Tao said and laughed with relief.
No one believed that the seeds still existed. The human species has had a hard time surviving in the years since the Collapse. No one took the time to check it, no one thought it was worth it because Svalbard lived without contact with the rest of the world for many years, in complete isolation. The seeds were forgotten or written off. Until the children came into contact with them.
“You were right,” Mei-Ling said. "Now we'll find the children and empty the vault. I'm giving us two days up here, and then we'll head south to get home before winter sets in."
