Summary
Hermann Hesse: The Steppe Wolf
The Steppe Wolf is probably the pinnacle of Hesse's creativity, a kind of psychoanalytic diary and intimate confession. The author seeks a way out of his personal chaos in a work of exceptional courage and significance. Harry Haller, the hero of the novel and the writer's kind of spiritual double, who unites the many problems of the dawn of the modern age, is in conflict with himself and the world around him. Steppenwolf is a novelized critique of modern civilization, from which Harry is constantly looking for a way out, by any means, even suicide. However, he feels this way out is illegal and too simple, so he tries to learn to live.
