Summary
Ken Follett: World Without End I-II
This novel is a kind of continuation of "The Pillars of the Earth" and takes place two centuries later with the descendants of some of the actors of "The Pillars of the Earth". They will bear witness to two terrible events: the beginning of the Hundred Years' War and the Black Death. The cathedral and the priory are once again the scene of a clash of conservative and progressive ideas, old and new customs, love and hate, greed and altruism, ambition and resignation. As in the previous one, so in this substantial novel new ideas appear that are applied in medicine, trade, architecture and law. The novel begins on the feast of All Saints in 1327, when the children Caris, Godwy, Philemon and Merthin wander away from the priory. A thief, a bully, a little genius and a girl who wants to be a doctor will intertwine their lives, testifying to prosperity, famine, plague, and war... World without end part two Sister Caris treats patients in the monastery. Godwyn became the prior, Philemon his deputy, and together they plot how to build a palace, where the money they steal from the nuns will come in handy. Bishop Richard is with the king and is working on preparations for a new campaign against France. Merthin lives in Florence, is married and has a child, a girl named Lolla. But the Black Death spread across Europe, decimating the population of the Old Continent and looming over the lives of the now adult protagonists, haunted by the events they witnessed one fateful day in their childhood. To date, Ken Follett has collected ninety million enthusiastic readers worldwide. He wrote a large number of bestsellers, of which the best seller of all time is the colossal work The Pillars of the Earth. We finally got a kind of continuation of that novel, which can be read separately without any problems. World Without End is set in the same place as Pillars of the Earth, two centuries after the inhabitants of that medieval town finished building a magnificent Gothic cathedral, and presents the descendants of some of the characters from Pillars of the Earth who will experience two major historical events: the beginning of the Hundred Years' War and the Black Death. The cathedral and the priory will once again occupy a central place in the network of love and hate, greed and pride, ambition and revenge, but this time these exceptional characters will also find themselves at the crossroads of new ideas - about medicine, trade, architecture and justice. In a world where advocates of the old ways passionately clash with those of progressive ideas, intrigue and tension will quickly reach a boiling point against the devastating backdrop of the greatest natural disaster ever to hit mankind.
