Summary

Hanif Kureishi: The Last Word

At the heart of Hanif Kureishi's provocative new novel The Last Word, published after a hiatus of many years, are questions like: "How do you tell the story of life?" and "Is it ever possible to tell the whole truth and only the truth?"

"The Last Word" is a comedy about two writers, a younger and an older, at first glance opposite, but actually complementary and mirroring characters, budding young biographer Harry Johnson and seventy-year-old British writer of Indian origin Mamoon Azam. The most brilliant moments of the old man's career are now behind him, so the young writer is tasked with a new biography to restore the glory of the once rebellious leader of the generation, the "creator of worlds", the "teller of important truths" and the "great literary Satan". After arriving at Mamoon's country estate, Harry realizes that the task he accepted is anything but what he expected...

In the verbal duels that permeate the novel, two writers talk about women, argue about women, fall in love and fall out of love, but also discuss the most serious topics related to sexuality, desire, love and writing. At the same time, the reader enters a very drinkable and entertaining story, which Kureishi, by his own admission, prefers, because it is the way he sees the world, even though he is not the type of writer most readers would reach for when they want to read something comical. As he says, "I like the idea of writing about someone who is difficult, who others consider problematic. I like people with difficult characters. I would like to be like that."

One way a writer can refuse to take himself too seriously is to write books like The Last Word. The author's wild playfulness does not spare anyone, neither the author, nor the biographer, nor the publisher, nor various followers. In any case, it's a hilariously funny book that some say borders on good taste, his wisest work to date, and a fun, Monty Python-esque take on literary life.
