Schalansky Judith

Summary

Judith Schalansky: The Giraffe's Neck

Inge Lomark, a biology teacher in an elementary school located in the former East Germany, is a maniacal fan of Darwin's principles of evolution, after which the school where she works is named. She views education as survival of the fittest and is therefore not particularly inclined to treat her students gently. She treats them and classifies them as biological species and views them all in that light, even her own daughter. However, as people leave for the West in search of work and better opportunities - yes, even in Germany some are fleeing further west - she realizes with horror that the future of the school is in question and that she herself will have to face what she is learning - either she will adapt or she will not survive. Eileen Battersby, critic for the Irish Times, wrote of it: "'Extraordinary' is too weak a word for this novel." It's very funny, desperately sad and real, and utterly shocking."
