Summary
Ranko Matasović: Linguistic diversity of the world
Origin, development, prospects
Ranko Matasović is one of the most respected Croatian linguists and this is his historical account of the phenomenon of linguistic diversity in the world. It was born from the idea of talking about the growing phenomenon of language endangerment with a small number of speakers precisely from the pen of a native speaker of one such language, at the same time an expert who can best feel and interpret the effects of globalization on our language.
This interesting and informative book answers some of the general questions of linguistics in a scientific and popular way: how and why languages differ from each other, why in some parts of the world and in some periods of world history they differ more and in others less, and why about six thousand languages are spoken in the world today. At the same time, Matasović offers answers to some socially relevant questions: why most languages in the world today are threatened with mass extinction, why this is undesirable, and what can be done to prevent it from happening.
