Jasmina Grković-Mejdžor: Writings from Historical Linguistics
The title of the book Writings from Historical Linguistics directs the reader to the approach of the author of these lines to the study of language history: the history of language is and must be primarily a linguistic discipline, which, starting from the description of synchronous systems, goes beyond this description by searching for the causes, mechanisms and principles of language development, both those related to a specific language or group of languages, and those that could be of a universal character. Therefore, its inseparable companion and stronghold is general linguistics, to which, for its part, historical linguistics repays its debt with its research. In the same spirit is my belief that in linguistic research there is no partition between synchrony and diachrony, because every synchronic system is only a segment and cross-section in the diachronic vertical and its understanding is not possible without insight into what preceded it. In recent years, to my great satisfaction, this understanding has gained more and more supporters in our country, especially when it comes to the Novi Sad linguistic school.
