Summary
Raimund Baron Stillfried: In Search of Atlantis: Bosnia and Herzegovina 1888-2008
As a miracle, the "Bosnian map" of the photographer Baron Raimund Stillfried survived the horrors of two wars, and even a bomb hit at the end of World War II, unscathed. All the photos in that folder were created during the last decade of the 19th century. They depict in a very direct way the cities, towns and landscapes of today's Bosnia and Herzegovina, which at that time represented a new part of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. Therefore, they are an important document of that time, because they preserved the moments of the very beginning of modernization in this area. Of special importance is the literary addition, which Dragana Tomašević took upon herself. With great knowledge and a great ability to immerse oneself, she chose literary passages in addition to individual places in the photos, in order to provide the reader with additional information, as well as exciting and varied insights into that country. Dževad Karahasan's essay enriches the book with fundamental considerations about human memory, where the reception of time and the acquisition of experience occupy a central role.
