Freud says: "When psychoanalysis became a subject of discussion in France as well, Genet behaved badly, showed insufficient knowledge of things and used inappropriate arguments. I finally got through to him and he devalued his own work, announcing that when he spoke of 'unconscious' mental actions he didn't mean anything by it, it was simply 'une façon de parler'". I have often wondered how Wittgenstein, who himself, for his own reasons, considered the "hypothesis of the unconscious" to be only 'une façon de parler' and that it creates philosophical difficulties rather than solving scientific problems, could enjoy such favor from supporters of the Freudian cause.
