Hippocrates: On the Types of Air, Water and Places
Of all the writings of Hippocrates, of which there are about sixty, the book On the Types of Air, Water and Places has always been the best known and most read. Until the end of the 19th century, its authenticity, i.e. the fact that it was authored by Hippocrates himself, was not questioned. Despite the fame it enjoyed, our writing experienced many hardships during the manuscript transmission, and thus a good part of the writing, dedicated to the description of the physical and psychological characteristics of the Egyptians and Libyans, was lost, while the order of the chapters in the first part of the writing was greatly disturbed. Before delving into the intricate problems of authorship, dating, and manuscript transmission of the writings, we will briefly review the basic information about the Hippocratic Collection and its presumed author.
