Summary
Michael Palairet: Balkan economies around 1800 - 1914
Evolution without development
Balkan economies around 1800-1914 is a highly revisionist book that follows and compares the economic development of Serbia, Bulgaria, Bosnia, Montenegro and Macedonia in the century preceding the First World War. Michael Palairet relies entirely on original documents to prove that the territory probably experienced economic decline rather than growth, at least from the middle of the 19th century. Doctor Palairet points out that the Ottoman rule, although it was far from encouraging development, nevertheless enabled greater progress than the political arrangements of independent states. Thanks to the fundamental research he did while writing it, the book was written with the aim of presenting the final economic history of the Balkans.
