The book continues Viktor Žmegač's previous success "SMS Essays", in which the author uses a short essay form and with a casual tone of narration, devoid of professorial teaching, talks about very serious topics. In this book, too, the reasons for the essays are very often related to incidents from the author's everyday life: it can be a book the author is currently reading, a newspaper article, a social phenomenon, a popular saying, graffiti written on the wall... The stylistic freedom, literary expression and conscious avoidance of strict scientific discourse allow the author to freely jump from topic to topic, demonstrating his erudition in an unpretentious and interesting way. These short essays are modeled after similar books by Benjamin, Adorno and Vatery. In a concise and pointed way, a form is created that best fits the name "synthetic prose". It intertwines different types of discourse (from cultural consideration to actualist records of social phenomena of the contemporary period). However, this prose is also synthetic in the sense that it is based on strong contrasts between the philosophical texture and detached notes that evoke the atmosphere of tram rides. This book differs from the previous one in that it is no longer dominantly focused on events from the author's childhood, but also deals with events from a more mature period; in a peculiar way it represents an intellectual autobiography. Viktor Žmegač, academic, professor emeritus of the University of Zagreb, Germanist with a European voice, Croatian, musicologist and writer was born in 1929 in Slatina. He obtained his doctorate in science in 1959, and from 1971 until his retirement in 1999 he worked as a full professor of German literature at the Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb. He has published about twenty books in the country and abroad.
