Svetlost i senke - Kultura Srba u Trstu

Mitrović Marija

Summary

Prepared by Marija Mitrović: Light and shadows - Culture of the Serbs in Trieste.

Trieste is a city where traces of several cultures are visible; in addition to Italian, there are also German, Austrian, Slovenian, Croatian, Serbian... Since traces of Serbian culture have been largely neglected, Professor Mitrović's book has a double task: on the one hand, to collect and briefly present the most significant works on Serbian culture in Trieste that were written in Italian, while on the other hand, it is necessary to give a contemporary picture of the Serbian diaspora in this city.

In the book, the reader will find everything important that has been recorded so far in Trieste culture: o the Serbian church, cemetery, school, choir, economy, buildings... Texts were written especially for this book about the economic contribution to Trieste of the "old" Serbian diaspora (Marko Dogo) and the architecturally significant houses that were built in Trieste by order of rich Serbian merchants (Marianđel Albanese).

From already existing Italian studies, the book brings two texts by the famous art historian Mariza Bianko Fiorin, who deals with the significance of the Serbian church in the city and the description of the Serbian cemetery in Trieste. In this context, the study raises the question of today's Serbian diaspora, which neither knows traces of Serbian culture in the city where it most often lives as a complete stranger, nor is it always aware of what the region and the city of Trieste are doing to facilitate their integration, which is also discussed in the book.
